Utopia - A dream
Prologue: Year 1034 AE (AE - After the End, roughly 5047 AD based on old reckoning):
Science and mankind were able to cross all barriers and technological development reached its zenith. But along with development also came more and more weapons of mass destruction. The 4th World War almost completely obliterated mankind. Earth which had earlier lost its atmosphere(from the 3rd World War) also lost its entire Lithosphere and a substantial part of its Asthenosphere. Most of us remaining survivors stay in isolated pockets of habitable environments made artificially deep inside of the Earth's surface surviving on synthetic supplements. We realised that Earth won't be able to last much longer and 15 space expeditions were sent to look for Earth-like planets.
None returned!!!
I am Derek and I am part of the 25 member crew who started on the 16th space expedition 25 years earlier. We have been looking at various solar systems in the Milky Way; one by one selecting planets which had earlier been suspected of having earth-like environment. But so many time we have had our hopes crushed that we are now only driven by habits. This time we are nearing Amadeus XIV, the Sixth planet in Sirius B solar system from which an Earth-like atmosphere has been detected. Our spaceship has total 25 occupants including all crew and technicians. We have been chosen from various fields so that we can be completely self sufficient. 25 occupants also comprise of 5 women who are essential for propagating human life and are now a days one of the most rare commodities on earth. I am the Group's Material scientist and also double up as part of the security team. Although being a scientist makes me irreplaceable; the power and command structure has always been dominated by the the Security chiefs. Hence summoned by the Flight commander I move towards the Main Control Room. The Commander informs us all that Amadeus XIV is now within viewing distance and all should line up on the viewing platform except for the scientists who should get to work immediately on analysing the various Atmospheric and Elemental data from the planet. Most of us have now repeated this drill numerous times without any positive result and don't have much hope about this one too. We work out of habit as the scopes and detectors of our Space Vehicle are focused on the planet expecting to hear the same old message of LIFE SUSTAINABILITY 0 % to pop up. It took 20 minutes this time which was abnormally longer for such kind of analysis and suddenly the screen lights up with the visual of Amadeus XIV and a bold Green sign shown LIFE SUSTAINABILITY 100 %. We are all shocked to inactivity for one full minute and then all hell breaks loose. Everyone is shouting and clapping out of excitement. The atmospheric composition is almost identical to that of earth so I check the results from the spectroscopic analysis of the planet structure. After running through the data through various elemental analysis algorithms, what I find completely blows my mind. I saw that although the primary structure of the elements were different from Earth but their physical and chemical properties were eerily similar. I turn my head towards my colleagues and share my ideas with the others. Then in unison we all turn towards the Commander and say to him the magic words:
Yes, Amadeus XIV can sustain human life!!!
There is complete chaos everywhere; we have already crossed through the thick atmosphere of Amadeus XIV and are now descending fast towards the land surface. We have a flawless landing and on the commander's order line up to move out. The air composition seems similar to earth but the Commander doesn't want to take chances and choses one of his security personas guinea pig for going out first. We watch with rapt attention as the soldier moves out and after a few faltering steps looks towards us and gives the ok signal. It surprised and happy he got used to the atmosphere so fast which meant the atmosphere was not rejecting our bodies meaning we could move around freely without the need of space suits. Suddenly we hear click of guns and shouts commanding us to kneel down with hands raised. While we were unaware it seems a group of local inahbitants infiltrated our ship through the emergency back door. I find it surprising how easily our attackers could find the hidden back door. But we are surrounded and do what we are told. The faces of these attackers are humane which is even more surprising. The leader names himself Han. His face for some reason looks extremely familiar to me. We are instructed to walk out side and follow their lead. Our commander shouts defiance and asks the leader of the group about who they were and where they were taking us. The leader calmly turns towards him and with a smile say:
Welcome to Utopia !!!
What was the most astonishing in the behaviour of the captors was their deference to the five women in our group. The polite way in which they talked with them and the kind/respectful way they handled them was shocking to most of us. These were behavior similar to the myths and legends of old days on earth which our commanders scoffed as uncivilized behavior. On earth as technology grew the society had become more and more patriarchal or male dominated. The feminist movements were all crushed and women were secluded only for breeding and satisfying the needs of the high commanders of the society. There were a few exceptions who treated women with kindness, but those were shunned and punished as heretics. While I had been thinking along these lines we had reached what looked from afar as a village. When we neared the village I realised there was no boundary and no walls anywhere. All houses were single storey buildings and had beautiful gardens filled with flowers and lands planted with crops. As we moved into the village we saw little children playing around everywhere. there was no fear in their eyes and everybody looked completely content and happy. What was even more shocking were the number of women visible everywhere. Their number were at least equal if not more then the men and surprisingly even the men seemed to take orders from women in certain cases. We crossed many such outlandish scenes and finally neared a huge dome shaped building placed at what I was guessing at the centre of the building. As soon as we entered the women were taken into the dome and and the men were led to an area separated from the main dome. Our captors led us to massive bathing units which was surprisingly similar to what we had only read and saw in old Earth videos. There we were roughly scrubbed up and washed until all the grime and dirt from our bodies were removed. I felt almost raw after this treatment as bathing wwhile wasting so much precious water was simply sacriledge for us from Earth. This entire process took almost 3-4 hours and then we were forced into white dresses made of cotton type materials. From an door at the side I saw their leader Han enter again and announce:
The Elders are ready to see you!!
The Utopia - A dream fulfilled
One by one we were taken away by Han taking 20 minutes for each. We were being taken into the dome through a side door separate from where the women were taken in and none of the guys leaving returned which was making me extremely afraid. my turn came and Han led me into the dome. I entered into a huge room flanked by an array of doors on either side . He took me through one such door on the right which led to another hallway with numerous doors. This sequence was repeated so many times that began to wonder how any one could remember anything in this maze of rooms. Just when I was able to ask Han how long he led me into a massive room which was of so magnificient height that it could only have been directly below the dome. In the centre of the room was a massive circle with 10 huge pillars rising looking towards the centre. On these pillars were 10 thrones on which sat 10 oldest people I had ever seen - 5 women and 5 men. I was instructed to stand in the centre among them. All of the elders were looking towards me in a kind way. One of them asked how Berek was. I was completely taken aback at this question. How could he know about my great-grandfather. He noticed my surprise and apologised and introduced himself as Hador. and that Han whom I just met was from his family. I couldn't believe what I was hearing Hador was a colleague of my great-grandfather who was a legendary scientist and I had only seen his pictures as Decorated members of the 15th Mission send From Earth similar to ours about 200 years earlier. If he was still alive now that would make him roughly 230-250 years old. This also explained why Han looked vaguely familiar to me as he was almost an identical copy to Hador. He started smiling at my baffled expression and explained all the inhabitants I saw on this planet were from the various space expeditions send from Earth since the past 2000 years. I ask why then none of them returned or contacted back to Earth their motherland. To this he answered that they didn't want Amadeus to become another Earth ; once so green so beautiful and completed destroyed by selfish mankind. He told how some among the earliest explorers realised this and revolting against their military commanders built a society which was a beautiful union of scientific advancements without harming the natural balance. The believed how the patriarchal society on earth was failing because of the destruction of balance between male and female and hence built a society where Man and Woman have equal rights equal rights. They explained how violence is completely deplored and all conflicts are resolved by democratically chosen elders peacefully. After explaining the various details of the society he brought the topic back to that of judgements and with it the mood inside the hall changed completely. With an expression which was at the same time sad and grave Hador pronounced my sentence.
'' Derek, scientist from Earth your nature has been observed and your sensible personality and scientific know how counts in your favor. However on the topic of your social behavior you fail. Earth has degraded the lives of the women who are the very genesis of life to such a deplorable ratio now that only 5 women could be afforded on this mission!!! It is a shame on us all humans. from the 5 women who accompanied you we have come to know that although you were never personally cruel to them like the majority of others with you; you also never even once stood up for their rights. You always thought to follow the safer options and allowed all atrocities happenning around you.
Because of this crime you are sentenced to a peaceful death for 100 years!!! ''
Immediately after the sentence I was taken to an isolated government facilities. While passing through the various cell doors I realised a lot of agonising screams coming out of some of the cells. I could especially hear hair-raising screams of our Commander. I was so shocked and confused with the verdict that I had gone completely numb. I was thankfully being taken to a separate facility and while passing through the various buildings I caught a small glimpse of a courtyard where all 16 expedition Space Ships were placed. I was taken into a room which smelled like restorative chemicals. There Han un-cuffed me and asked me to lay down. A few doctors started strapping me up to various intravenous fluids. My body started going numb. All that was left were my senses. Then Han walked to me and looking at my confused and fearful face explained my sentence to me. My crime was not standing for our women but I didn't commit those crimes hence I was forced to lay in a comatose sleep where I would be alive but with only my mental capacity intact. After completing 100 years I would rejoin the community. Human life was treasured on Utopia adn death penalty was seldom given. He further said people who committed atrocities like our commander were subjected to 100 years of unimaginable pain. Even he would be kept alive in spite of the pain and could rejoin if he regretted his actions. I realise this was the secret behind Hador's long age. I thank Han again for this favor and tell him I regret my mistakes and am ready for my punishment. On Han's commands a final fluid flow is activated and my body is placed into a cocoon completely filled with cryogenic fluid mixed with restorative/preservative fluid and I am shelved into a huge room filled with hundreds of cocoons same as mine.

If you can imagine it , you can buy it....
Although the idea to write this blog-post came from eBay's blogging contest (bit.ly/eBayCheck_Extention) on Indiblogger, I must confess the appeal was strong enough for me to drag myself away from my now-often-taken sabbatical from blogging. The idea was to imagine how the future of shopping would look like. Below are a few events that I believe are the future.
All in one
This I believe is the next obvious step and is going to happen everywhere soon. I believe all the online shops are going to eventually get together under one big umbrella company. The major headache for all of us customers now a days is that there are too many options available. It is a matter of too many riches. Although more choices are always useful but too many options sometime can also lead to more confusion and and added to that is the ever-present insecurity that some other online shopping portal may be selling the same stuff at a cheaper rate. So all online (at least the major ones) should and will get together into one big entity. Already progress has started in this field with for example companies like eBay, Amazon have already started bringing lots of small retail suppliers together.
Smarter and more interactive web portals
With the boom in online shopping, the role of the salesman has now merged with the Site/Web designers. This is an area where a lot of changes will occur. The sites of the shops will become more and more smarter and interactive. Irrespective of a person's prior knowledge one will have lots of reviews and ratings from past users immediately at his/her disposal to assist inn purchases. We will be able to exactly customize the purchase according to our needs. The zenith of this will be when the artificial intelligence enters into the picture or we reach a stage when we just have to think what we want and we get it!!
Renewal and Recycling guarantee
This concept is going to take a lot of thinking but will be implemented in the future. This is especially true for the always evolving electronics industry. The idea here is to give a guarantee of immediate renewal to the latest model at a cheaper price or smaller but fixed annual fees. Although this may look a very costly venture in the beginning; one must understand that in electronics the older models which are many generations earlier are literally rubbish. However if there is a guarantee of immediate renewal and renovation. Then the customers will have always the latest set-ups and the companies will have lot of slightly older version components that can be hopefully put to some use and be recycled. The renewal guarantee will the next smarter version of the current exchange-on-destruction guarantee that are now available.
Improved banking process
With Internet banking this process has already begun. Now a days many companies in Europe have started selling stuff which you may pay for by monthly installments. This would be especially great for salaried people as psychologically shelling out 30 € a month is much more easier for 10 months than paying 300 € at one go. Also many times when before accumulating those 300 € one usually buys a cheaper or different version. So this idea is going to pick up in the future.
Things are changing so fast that it is very difficult to exactly predict what will happen. But whatever happens the future will be extremely exciting..
An idealistic though it is, but I still believe that the best shopping is done when both the customer and the seller are happy in the end!!!

Optimization
Optimization is a term very commonly used term in science and maths but in fact plays a role every success. First lets understand what optimization means exactly. Optimization means - 'to make the best of everything' or 'to take best advantage of'. It means taking note of various complementary and /or contradictiry factors and making the best set of choices to obtain the best results.
While everyone appreciates to absolutes, the fact remains that like science in life to absolutes never exist. There are always various factor that influence and effect every decision/action we take. Hence correct optimization is paramount for achieving success.
Yes, like you I too am thinking why I am writing such simple common sense. One reason of this pschyco babble is my habit of becoming all philosophical when I am ill. And the second reason which is more important for you is that sometimes the truth keeps staring at us in the face and we still keep making wrong choices and only realise when a friends points out our mistakes. So this is me pointing out to you so that you may in turn point out the truth to me in my time of need.
Optimize , adapt and succeed. This may be extremely obvious but what is the harm in knowing this once again eh ?? We all will be just more successful in the worst case. ;)

Quote - Unquote: Patience
Natural heart's ivy, Patience masks our ruins of wrecked past purpose. (Gerard Manley Hopkins)
Business is thirty percent patience.
Lack of patience in small matters can create havoc in great ones.
Do not uncover the pot until the time is right.
If one can bear small losses, one will get along well with others.
Rome was not built in a day.

Smoking is 'Cool' but have you read the sign on it ???
(Statutory Warning: The below prose is a work of fiction. All its characters are imaginary and if any similarities are found then it is merely a coincidence.)
Date: March 2013, Rohini, Delhi
One balmy evening as often lately, I was strolling through the public park located at the Institutional Area, Rohini in Delhi, thinking alone about past times. The weather was excellent and the park was filled with sweet laughter of little children playing about and chirping of birds returning to their nest after a hard day at work. I turn a corner and was surprised to see a group of teenagers smoking cigarettes at a corner. Thinking me to be somebody they knew they reacted sharply hiding their hands behind backs, but when they noticed me as a stranger they became normal again. Now normally I would not interfere at this situation but today I thought it was my duty to warn the youngsters about the harms caused by smoking. However I forgot that I was smoking a cigarette of my own and I had lets very less credibility to warn them. The reaction I got was for my advice expected - mixed with many unspeakable expletives they ask me to mind my own business. Quite clearly I was not an ideal role model so I turned and walked away.
Date: May 2002, Saharanpur, U.P
My name is Rohan Kanwar and I belong to a traders family based in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. My dad owns a jewellery store and we are quite well off. I go to the nearby St. George, which is one of the best boarding school in the area. My best friend is Fraooque Siddique, who comes from a lower middle class family hailing from Lucknow and is enrolled through one of many scholarship programs that St. George has. I am doing good if you ask me. I would like to think I am intelligent and am able to score good grades even without working hard. Additionally I am also also good at sports. My friend Farooque is good in studies too and also being extremely hardworking is the class topper . I don't mind him his laurels as while he was the topper I have all the girls. I am in all respect having the best days of my life. Lately I have started hanging out with our seniors and have started experimenting on grown up things like cigarettes and drugs. I got included into the most popular group in the school. Most of the members of this groups were seniors who were also leaders of our school both in academics and sports. Apart from showing me how to party, they are also teaching me to be confident and improve my communication skills. Farooque is concentrating only on studies But I have started preparing for various entrance examination along with my regular studies.
An year has passed since then both me and Farooque have recently given my school board exams and am expecting my results. Farooque's has already arrived my house since morning 5 AM to check for the IIT results which is going to release now at 8 AM. We have been online on the official site and have been refreshing ourselves so that we don't get logged out as millions of other applicants too attempt to check their results. Farooque is very nervous and asks me to check my results first. After the exam itself I was pretty sure that I would crack IITJEE but the AIR rank is important and I was keeping my fingers crossed. I put in my application code and press enter; the server seems to have slowed down; I wait with bated breath and wow ---- I have scored AIR 87 in IITJEE!!!! Both Farooque and me looked stunned at the screen not believeing what I see , I check again the results is same..... I start yelling in delight but my Dad walks in asking why I was making so much noise. I tell him my score but he doesn't show any happiness, he says its just another of thousands other engineering college instead I should start helping him out in his business. Although this was a debate I had many times but today nothing could ruin my smile so I turn to Farooque and say if I scored AIR 89 he being the all state 5th rank in boards, which was released would make it to top 20 surely. Fraooque puts in his number and clicks enter and appears the results page showing 'you have failed to qualify IITJEE'. Considering that I knew Farooque has not prepared for JEE and how difficult qualifying JEE is I somehow had a similar premonition of this happening before. But still this dampened my mood as I really wanted my best friend to get tinto IIT too. Inspite of this though this was one of my happiest days of my life.
Date: November 2004, IIT Delhi
I wake up in my friend Zubin's room sometime in the afternoon. I barely remember the last night but considering how sore my throat felt and the massive headache I felt like I had finished a full carton of Cigarettes and drank a complete barrel of beer. My mid semester exams had just gotten over and quite apparently I had quite a party last night. I take a look at watch and it was 3 PM; I somehow felt like I was forgetting something. I checked my cell phone for missed calls and was shocked 16 missed calls from Farooque!! Damn I forgot I had promised I will join Farooque(who had qualified into IIT Delhi the year after me) and his friends for watching SRK starrer 'Veer Zaara' which was released just the previous day. To tell you the truth I am more a science fiction and action genre kind of a guy and Romantic movies are definitely very low on priorities. But Farooque being 1 year junior to me now, I was unable to meet him often owing to different friend circle. Also he being a die-hard SRK had made me promise that I would come to this movie for old time sake and had also agreed to bear my ticket cost. The show was starting at 3:30 Pm and the theater although nearby would take me atleast 45 minutes to reach even with a bike. You won't believe it but in just 15 minutes I cleaning up, grabbed a sandwitch from the Murali's plate in the canteen, stole Manvider's shirt and borrowed Karan's pulsar. Due to some luck the traffic was less and I reached the theater by 3:40 PM. Farooque already had the ticket so I rushed inside and started found him somehow inside the dark theater. Luckily for my those stupid adds about cigarette smoking being injurious to health had been going on and the movie had not started. As i sat on my chair I noticed the faint smell of rose perfumes but I didn't care too much as I had an angry friend to appease. The movie was quite boring but like a true warrior I tolerated all pain for my friend's happiness. It was when I got up to pee that I first saw her. Looking at her as the bright light shone on her face I couldn't think straight and bumped into some stranger's ahead leading to a big commotion. By the time the commotion ended I lot her but I knew at that time that I simply had to get her number. While Fraooque and his friend engorged themselves on those unhealthy yet magnificently mouthwatering bread pakodas I kept waiting for the girl to come back after intermission. She returned minutes before the intermission ended and I said hello to her. She was quite shy and gave me a weird expression but responded with a hi of her own. And the cinema went dark. That was the first time I met the girl with whom I decided to spend my entire life together with.
Date: October, 2005 Rendezvous, IIT Delhi
I hurry out of the railway station and see Farooque waiting for me with his bike. I had to leave at home to attend to my grandfather's funeral which was supposed to have continued for another week. However, after a very bad shouting match with my parents I decided to just take the next train and return to the place where I was already more at home. As I meet Farooque starts his bike I ask him to stop at the near by betel shop at the corner to get some cigarettes. Farooque keeps droning on with his usual advices about how cigarette smoking was bad for health but I had not had a puff for weeks as I was at home so I desperately needed one now. Another reason for me returning today was that today was the final day of the biggest college festival in northern India, Rendezvous. If you are anywhere nearby Delhi in October this is one place you must be. Farooque asked if I had informed Rimi about my early arrival. Rimmi Khanna is my girlfriend who studies at Delhi University. We met a year back in a cinema hall and hit it off immediately. Although all my friends including Farooque tell me that she is only with me for my money but I would like to disagree. Infact I have decided that soon I will talk with her about marriage. Next year I will be passing out with a good job hopefully and we both can then settle down happily. But these are all things for the future for now I am just happy to be back into my bustling campus. Farooque and me attend the main events which ended with a live performances by the winner of the 'War of the Bands'. We then go straight to a private rave party organized by our friends and seniors where we could all get together and each do whatever he wants with whoever he wants with. It was the best place to have some special fun with your girlfriends and this time it was in our hostel so even Farooque was forced to join us. I had been trying to reach Rimi but my call was disconnected many times before I stopped getting any response altogether. As I entered the hostel I met Murali smoking a cigarette at the entrance. His parents wanted to come visit him soon said he wanted to keep him room sanitized and smoke free; a problem I never had to face I parents never visited my place. As I say hi to him he stopped speaking kept staring at me like a zombie. I found this very surprising but moved on as I got up to 4th floor where my room was I noticed many rooms locked already which meant that the final culmination of the rave party for many couples had already begun. I joked about it to Farooque about this and he actually closed his ear so that he could stop the sinful words even entering his sanctimonious person. I saw Karan and Rez coming from the opposite side and called to them. As soon as they saw me they greeted me over enthusiastically and told me to join them to go have a beer in their room. I told them I needed to freshen up so I would go to my room and join them later. On this they started telling me that I could freshen up in their room itself. At this odd behavior I started to become suspicious and forced my way and opened my room. When I tried to open it I realized that it was locked from the inside so I started banging the door. With this action of mine everyone became completely silent which made me even more suspicious, so I started to bang the door harder. Finally the door opened and out came our senior Vicky half-naked saying who was the idiot who wasn't giving him his privacy. Vicky and me had a fight going on since a long time since we belonged to separate political factions in the institute so I replied to him to get the hell out of my room. At this he just smiled at me and mockingly showed me the way to come in . Inside what I saw was another event that changed my life. Under the bed covers was my girlfriend Rimi trying to cover her modesty.
Date: September, 2010, Greater New York Area, USA
I have just returned to my room from the gala dinner launched on my behalf on becoming the youngest Vice President in McKinsey & Company. Ashley, my girlfriend was changing in the washroom so I decided to take a puff and went out to our terrace. For some remembered at this pinnacle of success in my career I remembered Rimi. How heartbroken I was on that day I found her in my bed with Vicky, that day it seemed that the world had ended for me. I take out a cigarette and light it. In a way Rimi was responsible for my success. Had I not channelized my anger at that time into hardwork I would never have been able to get into IIM Ahmedabad and then joined one of the top Management firms in McKinsey & Company and would not have become a Vice President 3 years!!! I take a puff and blow out the smoke, I didn't know why but today I was getting very nostalgic. So I called my dad with whom I had not talked since 2 years now. He picks up and I give my greetings to him, weirdly he asked how I was. It is weird because he never let weak emotions like care for his son come even near his strong personality. So on hearing this concern in his voice I was very surprised. felt something in my through so I coughed a little cleared my through and told him that I was good too and informed him about my promotion. To this he surprised me by congratulating me and asked when I would return and we can meet again. I was now getting extremely suspicious as life had taught me the hard way to notice small differences in the nature of people and this was the main reason for the successes in my career. I felt like coughing again, it seems the sudden change of weather may have worked its magic on my throat again. However pulling in a long drag from my cigarette, I gave him a non committal answer and ask him to pass the phone to Mom. From my Mom I came to know the reason for his weird behavior, about an year ago my father had a massive heart attack and while they had tried to reach me I was unavailable. At this I remembered the spate of calls from various relatives during that time. But so engrossed I was in my work that I didn't give it any importance. For the first time it came to my mind that my father was getting old and not the same strong man with whom I had so many battles. For the first time in my life I felt myself getting concerned for my old man and asked Mom to give the phone to Father. When he responded I told him that I will finish up my latest work and take a long vacation from next week so that we could spend some time together ...... Cough!! Cough!!! Cough!!!
Date: May 2013, Rohini, Delhi
Evening is setting and my body is starting to feel extremely tired so I decide to return. I pop two mints to hide the smell of the cigarettes also wash with the nearby tap water many times. While returning I see Father walking towards me. I greet him and he immediately asks when would I stop smoking ?? As we together walk into Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center, I give him a sad smile and say to him ' No use stopping now Dad, It is too late.' He tell me to not loose hope but his attempt at encouraging me fails as his eyes well up in tears looking at me. I grab him and give him a tight hug and say him the only thing I can say now ' I am sorry, Dad!'
Prologue
That night in September 2010 when the coughing stopped I felt something liquid on my hands. On looking at it in light in doors I realized it was blood. Silvie immediately rushed me to the hospital and we did a battery of tests. I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer Stage IV. I succeeded everywhere, I was at the peak of success but I didn't take the signs seriously. I cannot blame my seniors who encouraged me to first smoke, I cannot blame my friends who smoked with you the only person who is to blame is me. The danger sign was written on every packet of cigarette I bought but every time I casually forgot the warning.I tried everything from chemotherapy to surgery but the cancer had spread far too much in my body. I moved back to India and underwent treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center. However I can feel my body parts starting fail. It is time to say my good bye.
